What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative medicine is defined as a combined approach to care that uses conventional medicine and evidence-based complimentary therapies. It is mainly used in chronic disease, symptom management, and illness prevention. It is studied and used in: chronic pain, cancer, mental health, autoimmmune diseases, migraines/headaches, sexual & reproductive health, minor physical injuries (e.g sprains, strains), sleep disorders, and rare chronic illnesses.
The benefits to this approach are collaborative and personalized care, that includes the mind-body-spirit connection, improves symptom management and increases health education & literacy. Examples of therapies used include acupuncture, yoga, massage, mindfulness, nutrition support, exercise, tai-chi, meditation, and cognitive behavioural therapy.
