Mindfulness and Movement
Mindfulness is a practice focused on being present and aware of senses and feelings without judgement.
Incorporating movement into this practice allows us to connect our physical and mental health.
Mindfulness is derived from Buddhism and Hinduism religions and traditions, and has been practiced for thousands of years. It is linked to yoga, vedic meditation, and “sati” in Buddhism. It was popularized in the West through integration with stress reduction and cognitive behavioural therapy.
Some of the benefits of mindfulness include:
Lower stress and relax an overactive mind,
Boost confidence, self-esteem, mood, and cognitive ability,
Strengthen and stretch muscles,
Can help to relieve symptoms of chronic illnesses like pain disorders, and side affects of medication like cancer treatments
Any activity can be mindful by focusing on body movements, sensations, and breathing, and unplugging from distractions. Examples include:
Yoga and stretching
Breathing exercises
Walking meditation
Working out, bike riding or any other repetitive exercise
